Gardeners Camberwell Health and Safety Policy
Gardeners Camberwell is committed to providing gardening and grounds maintenance services in a manner that safeguards the health, safety, and welfare of our employees, clients, contractors, visitors, and members of the public. This policy sets out our approach to managing health and safety risks across all gardening activities carried out by our team.
Our Commitment to Health and Safety
We will take all reasonably practicable steps to prevent accidents, injuries, and work-related ill health. Health and safety considerations are integral to planning and delivering our services, whether we are working in private gardens, shared outdoor spaces, or commercial grounds.
Management is responsible for implementing this policy, allocating appropriate resources, and ensuring that safe systems of work are in place. All staff are required to cooperate fully with these arrangements and to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
Before starting work at any garden or site, hazards will be identified and risks assessed. Control measures will be put in place to minimise risks as far as is reasonably practicable. Risk assessments will be reviewed regularly, especially when there are changes to work methods, equipment, or site conditions.
Safe working practices will be developed and followed for typical gardening tasks such as grass cutting, hedge trimming, planting, pruning, use of ladders, waste handling, and the operation of powered tools and machinery. Employees must not undertake tasks for which they have not been trained or where they feel conditions are unsafe.
Training, Information, and Supervision
All employees will receive appropriate health and safety induction and job-specific training, including the safe use of gardening tools, machinery, and equipment. Refresher training will be provided as required to maintain competency and to introduce updated procedures or equipment.
Supervisors will monitor working practices to ensure that procedures are followed and that any unsafe acts or conditions are identified and corrected promptly. Information about site-specific hazards and client requirements will be communicated clearly before work begins.
Use of Tools, Machinery, and Equipment
All gardening tools and machinery will be selected, used, and maintained in line with manufacturer instructions and relevant safety standards. Equipment will be inspected regularly and removed from service if found to be defective or unsafe.
Only trained and authorised personnel may operate powered equipment such as lawnmowers, hedge trimmers, chainsaws, blowers, and similar machinery. Guards, safety devices, and any required control measures must never be removed or bypassed.
Personal Protective Equipment
Gardeners Camberwell will provide suitable personal protective equipment where risks cannot be adequately controlled by other means. This may include gloves, protective footwear, eye and ear protection, high-visibility clothing, respiratory protection, and weather-appropriate clothing.
Employees are required to use the provided protective equipment correctly, keep it in good condition, and report any loss or damage so that replacements can be arranged. PPE is considered a last line of defence and does not replace the need for safe systems of work.
Chemicals and Hazardous Substances
Where fertilisers, pesticides, herbicides, or other hazardous substances are used, they will be handled strictly in accordance with manufacturer instructions and applicable safety regulations. Only trained and authorised staff may handle such substances.
Substances will be stored securely, transported safely, and used in quantities appropriate to the task and conditions. Measures will be taken to prevent contamination of soil, water, and surrounding areas, and to protect clients, neighbours, wildlife, and the general public.
Manual Handling and Ergonomics
Gardening activities often involve lifting, carrying, digging, and repetitive movements. Gardeners Camberwell will seek to minimise the risk of manual handling injuries by using mechanical aids where reasonably practicable, planning work to reduce unnecessary lifting, and training staff in safe lifting techniques.
Employees should avoid lifting loads that are too heavy for them, seek assistance when required, and take regular breaks from repetitive or strenuous tasks to reduce the risk of strain and overuse injuries.
Working Outdoors and Environmental Conditions
Our work frequently takes place outdoors and may be affected by weather, ground conditions, lighting, and seasonal changes. Weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, wind, and ice, will be taken into account when planning work.
Reasonable steps will be taken to protect workers from sun exposure, dehydration, heat stress, cold stress, and slips or falls caused by uneven or slippery ground. Where conditions are deemed unsafe, work will be postponed or alternative methods will be used.
Public and Client Safety
We recognise our duty to protect clients, visitors, neighbours, and members of the public who may be affected by our gardening activities. Work areas will be organised to minimise access by unauthorised persons, and clear communication will be maintained with clients regarding any potential hazards.
Where necessary, barriers, signs, or temporary controls will be used to keep people away from hazardous areas, especially during the use of powered equipment, when working at height, or when applying chemicals.
Incident Reporting and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, near-misses, injuries, and dangerous occurrences must be reported to management as soon as reasonably possible. Incidents will be recorded, investigated, and used to identify corrective actions and prevent recurrence.
Employees will be informed of the emergency procedures relevant to each site, including arrangements for first aid and contacting emergency services. First aid supplies will be available, and designated personnel will be trained in basic first aid where appropriate.
Responsibilities and Continuous Improvement
Overall responsibility for health and safety lies with the management of Gardeners Camberwell. Managers will ensure that this policy is implemented, monitored, and reviewed regularly to reflect changes in legislation, best practice, and the nature of our gardening services.
Employees have a duty to follow safety procedures, use equipment correctly, cooperate with management, and report any concerns or hazards. We encourage open communication about health and safety matters and welcome suggestions for improving our practices.
This Health and Safety policy is reviewed periodically to ensure it remains effective, relevant, and suited to the gardening and grounds maintenance services provided by Gardeners Camberwell.
